Sitting Posture and Stress

You’ve heard that sitting too much just might kill you. Today’s video explains that poor sitting posture can cause stress. It mainly because the lack of movement translates into an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. To add insult to injury, it turns out that spending your day hunched over a computer also has major ramifications for your mental well-being.

The issue: Poor posture can put you in a lousy mood and make you feel more stressed and depressed.

Why Posture can Cause Stress

Sitting posture may lead to stress, this fact warranted the attention of researchers and studied the ill effects of having to sit for too long or just sitting incorrectly. The results showed psychological stress trends to increase muscle activity, while a backward sitting posture trends to decrease muscle activity.

Considering the busy and stressful life in modern lifestyle, this study suggests subjects with neck pain should maintain a backward sitting posture during computer use. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are common among computer users, especially involving the neck and shoulder region. Previous studies showed subjects with neck pain had altered muscle recruitment patterns that persisted throughout the sustained computing task. Moreover, some studies reported that working posture and psychological stress also influence muscle recruitment.

How to Maintain Good Posture

Adopting the correct sitting position is essential for maintaining good posture and a healthy back and spine. Most people can improve their sitting posture by following a few simple guidelines.

Sitting with a straight back and shoulders will not only improve a person’s physical health but can make them feel more confident.

Many people spend the majority of their day sitting down as they tend to sit when commuting, working in an office or studying, and relaxing at home. Prolonged sitting can cause a range of adverse health effects, including bad posture and back health.

People who have to sit for extended periods at a desk because of their work or schooling need to take extra precautions to make sure they maintain a healthy posture and back.

When working at a computer for long periods, a person can help improve their sitting posture by 1. keeping the monitor at arm’s length and no more than 2 inches above the natural line of sight; 2. customizing workspaces, for example adding footrests, wrist pads, or backrests; 3. using a standing desk to alternate between sitting and standing; and 4. using an ergonomic chair, a yoga ball, or a knee chair
