Why bad posture can cause HEADACHES?

Bad posture does a lot more harm than just make a person look slouched over and less confident.

Posture and headaches are interconnected, and the way that a person sits, and stands can influence the frequency and severity of headaches.

Everyone would like to think that the only cause of their headaches at the end of the day is something out of their control… work, spouse, children, bills, etc. In fact, while those may contribute to how your muscles react, they may not actually be causing your headache. The way you sit at work, the way you hold your phone, the way you type on your computer, all of these things and many more of your daily tasks if not done correctly contribute to headaches.

What causes headaches?

There are a lot of reasons that people get headaches. One common reason for headaches, especially tension headaches is muscle tension and tightness. This tightness occurs all over the head and neck and can almost feel like there is a rubber band around your head sometimes. The tightening of the muscles is due to bad posture; your muscles are trying to adapt to the constraints that are being put on them.

Moreover, when you have bad posture, you may spend a lot of time leaning forward and this makes it more likely that you are going to clench your jaw. When your jaw clenches it causes the muscles in your face to tighten and this can result in headaches and jaw pain. Not to mention if you clench your jaw a lot it can wear down your jaw joint, which can lead to even bigger problems.

Maintaining a healthy posture can not only help reduce the stress and pressure on the spinal joints of your neck- but it can also help dramatically reduce headaches. The first step in regaining a proper posture is to establish normal motion. All things stated we could not stress more how awareness of one’s posture is so important.
